Finding Joy in the Journey: Recovery Adventures That Heal

Misty Durnford

CEO and founder

As founder and visionary of Hideaway Recovery, I’ve turned personal loss into a mission to help others find freedom from addiction. A widow and passionate advocate for mental health, I created an evidence based facility that treats the whole person, mind, body, and spirit. Guided by compassion and a belief in the resilience of the human heart, I lead a dedicated team committed to restoring dignity, connection, and hope. Through Hideaway Recovery, I continue to encourage and guide others to heal, rebuild, and embrace a brighter, healthier future.

At Hideaway Recovery, healing means more than sobriety—it means reconnecting with joy, nature, and real-life experiences that restore the soul.

Recovery isn’t just about what you leave behind—it’s about what you step into. At Hideaway Recovery, we believe healing happens not only in quiet moments of reflection, but also in laughter, movement, and connection. This summer, we’re embracing the power of experience, turning simple outings into soul-restoring adventures.

Rediscovering Joy Through Nature

Whether it’s hiking through the serene beauty of Tahquitz Canyon or dipping our toes into the Pacific at Surf City, these moments outside the walls of treatment are part of the real work of healing. They teach us that recovery isn’t confinement—it’s expansion. It’s learning how to breathe deeply again, to be present, and to feel fully alive.

Connection That Lasts

These shared adventures build more than memories—they build community. The bond formed while walking side-by-side on a trail, or sharing laughs during a beach day, becomes the support system that carries our clients through tough moments. In recovery, connection is everything—and we cultivate it intentionally, both in and out of our program setting.

Healing Through Play and Presence

When was the last time you felt playful? Free? That’s the kind of energy we bring into our outings. Art walks, evening barbecues, and spontaneous photo ops in front of Palm Springs’ colorful murals are reminders that healing doesn’t always have to be heavy. Sometimes, the most powerful breakthroughs come through joy.

Why It Matters

Research shows that meaningful, enjoyable activities promote mental health, reduce cravings, and help individuals sustain long-term sobriety. At Hideaway Recovery, we’ve seen firsthand how stepping out into the world—safely, supported, and sober—can reignite a sense of purpose.

You Don’t Have to Wait to Start Living Again

Recovery isn’t the end of fun—it’s the beginning of real, grounded joy. And summer is the perfect time to rediscover it.
